GuangHua Chinese School
I started volunteering of teaching chess class at Guanghua Chinese school every Sunday since 2013. Here is the class introduction email that I sent to the students/parents in 2013.
Hello and welcome to the chess class! My name is Chris and I am a 9th grader at Pennfield Middle School. I started playing chess eight years ago. I have spent a lot time studying and playing. It was fun, but also a very challenging experience for me. There have been many losses and bad games along the way, but there were also many great wins. After eight years, I am currently a USCF candidate master and my rating is 2197. I am still trying hard to reach my goal of becoming a National Master with USCF rating 2200 (only 3 rating points to go :).
Playing chess has many benefits. Countless researchers and studies have shown over the years that chess strengthens a child’s mental clarity, fortitude, stability, and overall health. It will not only help you become smarter, but also become mentally tougher to handle more pressure. For example you must learn that you will lose a lot of games before you can get the critical win. You should win with dignity and lose with grace. You should never give up. You must learn from your mistakes and work on your weaknesses. And last but not least, chess should be fun and enjoyable.
In the classes, we will cover chess opening theory, middle game strategy, tactics and common end games. I will hand out a lesson plans each class and try to make class interesting and engaging for students of all levels. For the advanced student, instead of listening to the material you already know, I will prepare some challenge puzzles for you to solve during the class. I have created a website for our classes at www.chesswizard.net/guanghua and you can find the PDF document of what we discussed during each class. We are going to have a play day every 3 to 4 classes. Please bring your board and piece to school on the play days. I hope to have a tournament at the end of the year.
We are going to have some chess fun this year!
